The Corvega Cup Series returned to the race track Friday night with two practice sessions for the Corvega Clash scheduled to kick off at 6:30. Rain, however, cancelled the first of those two sessions, and delayed the start to Final Practice. Final Practice would be limited to just 35 minutes, giving teams a short amount of time to dial in their cars for Saturday’s exhibition race. The track-drying process concluded around 8:30, and cars hit the track shortly after.
The first practice session of the season was largely uneventful, as expected, with many drivers taking the extra track time by making single car runs. That, however, was not the goal for some drivers. Philip von Borries, and new teammate Fred Martin, quickly paired up and drafted their way to the top of the leader board and stayed there for much of the session. Former champion Ben Smith, along with Inga Miller joined a seven car draft pack late in the session to vault into the top-10 with minutes to go. Urban Jaklin rounded out the top 5.
One driver, Kirby Ammons, did not attempt a single lap, as the team had to undergo an engine change. Per league rules, Ammons will start from the rear of the field on Saturday, and will forfeit the position drawn in the random qualifying draw Saturday afternoon.
