Paige Sitte won the season opening Truck Race at Daytona International Speedway Friday, her third victory in the series. Stole the lead from Kevin Schnaubelt just after taking the white flag as the field headed for turn 1 on the last lap. A frenzy in the last lap resulted in Cup Series regular Joshua Wilkinson taking second, while Truck Series drivers Dillon Young, Mick Schultz, and Cup driver Dallas Whitaker took top-5 spots. Schnaubelt would finish seventh.
Rookie Ryan Muth led the field to the green flag for the first time in his career, quite the feat for his first career start in the series, moving up from the ARCA Super Speedway Series this season. Muth would lead 27 laps en-route to an 18th place finish.
The race was slowed by five cautions for 20 laps, with two of the caution periods the result of big wrecks. The first occurring just 18 laps into the event, collecting series runner up in points last season, Kelly Homan as well as four others. One of those was Mike Hausen, who’s truck ended up on it’s roof in the tri-oval as a result of contact from Homan’s truck.
The second, and biggest incident of the race took place on lap 70, involving ten drivers, six of which retired from the race with heavy damage.
The series heads to the Atlanta Motor Speedway next week for the Hyundai Construction Equipment 200, where Kelly Homan looks to defend her win there from last season.
